Mae Jemison was the first African American woman to travel in space. One of seven astronauts aboard the Space Shuttle Endeavour, she entered Earth’s orbit on September 12, 1992. She was one of 15 candidates selected out of more than 2,000 people.

Although she’s most often recognized for her pioneering work with NASA, Mae Jemison has had many other career achievements.

She founded two companies, the Jemison Group, which explores and develops stand-alone science and technology companies, and BioSentient Corporation, a medical devices and services company focused on improving health and human performance. Before training to become an astronaut, she served in the Peace Corps in Sierra Leone and Liberia.

Jemison is the current principal of the 100 Year Starship organization, whose mission is to make human travel beyond our solar system a reality within the next 100 years: “The far side of the moon is the farthest a human has ever traveled. That was almost five decades ago. Isn’t it time we move forward?”

By downloading and sharing this poster, you’ll help raise awareness of the achievements of women like Mae Jemison, and hopefully inspire a new generation of women and girls working in and learning about STEM.
